7 Quick Takes: (Almost) Summer in the City

Linking up with Kelly.

It’s still technically spring, but it feels like summer in New York City, and the season of street fairs is upon us. Two weeks ago, there was a Ukrainian festival on the street where I work, and I ended up buying a new purse, which I really like, and a Marian icon.

I’ve been using the purse since, and I really like it. It’s the perfect size—big enough to hold a book or two and expandable if I have something bigger to carry.

I spent a lot of time outside during Memorial Day weekend (and successfully avoided sunburn). On Saturday, I went hiking with a friend. It was hot outside, but we mostly walked in the shade, and there were some beautiful views!

I’ve been hanging out in Astoria Park, too, now that the weather is nice. There was an international festival there a few weeks ago, and this past Sunday I wandered around at sunset—the river is always really pretty on summer nights.

I’ve been doing some babysitting with the Sisters of Life, which is a lot of fun—the kids are adorable! This week the Sisters celebrated their twenty-fifth anniversary, and I was able to stop by their block party for a few minutes during my lunch break.

I just finished reading Fr. Jacques Philippe’s book Searching for and Maintaining Peace, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. A few of my friends read it last year, and they kept mentioning it so often that I had to buy myself a copy, too! It was worth the hype—it is a very small book and a super-quick read, but it’s just brimming with wisdom. It’s written in a way that’s simple and easy to understand, yet very profound.

I mentioned reading more about the four temperaments a while back, and recently the Fountains of Carrots podcast did an episode discussing them in depth. They had some great insights, and it’s worth a listen!

I’m now on a Summer Friday schedule, which means I have off every other Friday—I’m working today, but I’ll have next Friday off. I’m excited to have more long weekends and time to relax!
